Blackberry - Thornless Chester
The largest fruiting of the near-thornless blackberries, Chester produces sweet medium-sized fruit late into the season. Give it a bit of room and a sturdy trellis as it’s a vigorous grower that will produce blackberries to the end of summer. A useful addition to the berry garden, as it bridges the gap between the summer and autumn fruiting raspberries. These berries fruit on second year wood. Prune after fruiting, but only remove canes that have already produced fruit. Provide a trellis or frame at planting to contain growth and for ease of harvest. For enhanced growth and fruiting we recommend using Troforte M Fruit & Citrus Slow Release fertiliser. Thornless Chester blackberry will grow to reach 2m height and 3m width.
Water: Water well and often when freshly planted and during warmer seasons. Use a chunky mulch, we recommend using Aussie Organics Chunky Pine Bark.
Sun: Full sun, ideally north facing and west protected. Part shade tolerant.
Soil: Fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. We recommend using Aussie Organics Premium Soil Conditioner and Charlie Charcoal prior to planting.
