Blueberry - Sunshine Blue
Sunshine Blue is one of the best blueberry varieties for Perth - semi-evergreen in our mild winters, self-pollinating, low-chill, and compact enough to manage well in a large pot. Blueberries are one of the few fruiting plants that genuinely need acidic soil to thrive: pH 4.5-5.5 is the target, and Perth's naturally alkaline sandy soils are essentially the opposite of what they want. Grow in a pot or raised bed using dedicated acidic blueberry potting mix, or work sulphur through the soil over several months to lower the pH before planting. This is not optional - blueberries in alkaline soil will yellow, stop fruiting, and eventually die. Full sun to part shade. Water regularly with the consistent moisture shallow-rooted blueberries need. Feed with an acid-forming fertiliser.
