Commonly known as the Blue Star fern, it’s not hard to see why. One of the hardiest ferns to grow by far, their beautiful large glaucous blue fronds can reach over 1m long with time, aging into an arching rounded shape. They are able to grow around baskets, in time hiding the basket completely. Excellent in shady gardens yet wonderfully tolerant of some direct sun, they also love a protected shady or dappled spot. If grown in sunnier spots ensure regular frequent watering during warmer months and deep soaks during heatwaves. Very suitable to a wide range of conditions indoors, they only dislike hot westerly windows. These ferns require very little maintenance once established. Use a high quality mulch to ensure soils are kept moist, and nutrients are provided to the shallow root system. For enhanced growth we recommend using Troforte M Indoor & Patio Slow Release fertiliser at half the recommended application rate. Blue Star ferns reach approximately 60cm-1.5m height and 1-2m width.

Water: With a preference for moisture during the growing season, water well when the top 1-2cm of soil becomes dry. Outdoors water well and often when freshly planted and during growing season and hotter periods. Use a chunky mulch, we recommend using Aussie Organics Chunky Pine Bark.

Sun: Full sun to part shade or dappled. Keep protected from westerly afternoon sun exposure.

Soil: Fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. We recommend using Aussie Organics Premium Soil Conditioner and Charlie Charcoal prior to planting.
